Class Video Check-in: Every Monday at 11:00
Now that the building is closed for the rest of the year, we'll keep this as a standing meeting. I'll send the meeting invite to student emails (and to Remind-- just in case.) We'll use this as a time to stay connected. Parents/students can email me with any announcements to share or fun ideas for the video chat. I'll stay on after the meeting to answer any individual questions as needed.
Weekly Schedule in Google Classroom - How to find the daily assignments
After some trial and error, we'll be sticking with accessing all of our distance learning through Google Classroom. The way that assignments post in Google Classroom can be confusing, so all assignments will be linked to our Weekly Schedule. Just follow the schedule in order each day and you'll be sure to get all the assignments done. Parents and students can watch a video here if you have questions about how to get to assignments through the Weekly Schedule.

Language Arts - Fantasy Unit
We've started a unit on Fantasy. Each week, Ellicott teachers will post two Readers Workshop video lessons for 5th grade students to watch. These (and all other) lessons will be linked to our Weekly Schedule. Students need to watch these videos and then practice the strategies that we demonstrate when they do their own daily 30+ minutes read/jot. This is the same structure that we used in our classroom before the world went sideways.
Read Aloud Our class read aloud is The Thief of Always by Clive Barker. I will be posting videos of myself reading this book out loud, just like we used to do in class. Students are asked to leave comments as they listen so we can have a classwide dialogue around the book. This also helps me see how students are engaging with the book. |
Independent Reading - Books at home / checking out e-books
During this unit, each student needs to be reading a book with fantasy elements. You may have some of these books at home-- it's okay to reread a book that you have already enjoyed if that's what you have available.
Students also have the option to check out e-books through the Sora app: How to sign out books online with Sora
Warriors Book #1, and a few other fantasy titles, are available to read on Epic Books.
These recommended books for fantasy are available for checkout on Sora (from simpler to most complex): Spiderwick Chronicles, The Edge Chronicles, Books of Ember, Deltora Quest, Warriors, Chronicles of Narnia, Rowan of Rin, Animorphs, Gregor the Overlander, Artemis Fowl, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson,Redwall, The Golden Compass.
